House Panel Approves Bill Making Motorcycle Helmets Optional for Adults

A House committee took the first step today toward repealing the state law that requires all motorcycle riders to wear safety helmets.

Louisiana - Without objection, the Committee on Transportation, Highways and Public Works approved House Bill 639 by Rep. Jim Morris, R-Oil City, to make wearing helmets optional for riders 21 and older. It would require helmets for riders under 21.

Motorcycle Mamas Take To The Highways

Sales and training increase as women get interested in motorcycling.

US Nationwide - Motorcycles aren’t just for men anymore. And women -- decked out in leather -- are proving it.

The open road is opening a little wider to accommodate this growing group of riders who find riding hogs mean freedom and individuality -- for both sexes.

The number of women who have purchased new Harley-Davidson motorcycles has steadily grown over the past 20 years, from four percent in 1990 to 12 percent today, Leslie Prevish, women’s outreach manager of Harley-Davidson Motor Company said on The Early Show Tuesday.

City Hopes New May Events Will Replace Cash From Bikers

The City of Myrtle Beach said it’s new slate of May events will eventually bring in tourists of all ages, and that can help re-coup some of the lost revenue from this year’s thwarted May bike rallies.

South Carolina - But at least one local business owner believes the damage has already been done to bring back valuable tourist dollars to all of the Grand Strand.

The annual Harley-Davidson motorcycle rally and the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bike Fest both saw subdued numbers after Myrtle Beach City Council passed a series of ordinances aimed at curtailing the events.

Weekend motorcycle deaths precede annual helmet protest at Michigan Capitol.

Michigan - The past weekend was marked with some tragic motorcycle accidents, which started an online debate about the safety of Harley Davidson motorcycles, helmet laws and sport bikes.

Over the Memorial Day holiday we reported on three accidents in the area, which included two fatalities, and one overseas fatality involving a local man.

Bikefest Draws Larger-Than-Expected Crowd

Comparing the number of visitors on the Grand Strand during the Harley Rally to the number during the Bikefest is like comparing day and night.

South Carolina - While the Harley Rally was by most accounts a bust, the Bikefest drew impressive crowds -- even in the city limits of Myrtle Beach.

The police chief in Atlantic Beach estimated as many as 175,000 bikers may have passed through the Grand Strand over the weekend.

Motorcyclists Make Annual Noisy Salute to Veterans in D.C. Parade

For hours on Memorial Day tens of thousands of bikers poured over the bridge into Washington in the 22nd annual tribute to veterans past and present, missing and present, that has become a festival of remembrance and an eye-popping, ear-shattering cultural event.

Washington DC - Shortly after noon yesterday, Paul Stancliff, 65, with his bad heart, gimpy arm and bum right leg, anchored himself and his tall, homemade flagpole at the east end of the Memorial Bridge near the mammoth bronze statues of Valor and Sacrifice.

The Run for the Wall for Veterans Marks 20th Anniversary

It started in 1989 as a road trip across the heartland of the United States. Participants of the inaugural Run For The Wall ride were just a couple of veterans who loved their motorcycles and loved their country even more.

US Nationwide - They started in San Diego and ended in Washington, D.C., where they joined a group of riders known as Rolling Thunder. Together, they were several dozen veterans at the nation's capital honoring prisoners of war and those missing in action.

Franklin Graham Rides Motorcycle for Charity, Takes on 'Moral Breakdown'

The Rev. Franklin Graham has been on a 3,800-mile, two-wheeled moral health journey the past week.

Tennessee - The 51-year-old evangelist and his BMW motorcycle are participating in the Kyle Petty Motorcycle Charity Ride to promote and benefit a North Carolina camp for chronically ill children. Graham, son of famed evangelist Billy Graham, stopped Saturday at the Chick-Fil-A in Brentwood as part of the eight-state trip.

He knows the purpose of his journey, but many people do not, he said.

Woman Charged in Fatal Motorcycle Accident

More than two months after the wreck, a Crestview woman has been charged in the fatal crash that killed 46-year-old Mark LaChapelle.

Florida - Florida Highway Patrol investigators say Juanita D. Young, 48, was responsible for violating the right of way and turning her 2003 Dodge truck in front of LaChapelle's 2006 Harley Davidson.

New Law Would Muffle Biker Noise

The state wants to muffle loud motorcycles, but riders said the bill will cause them hardship.

New Hampshire - State Rep. Judith Day of North Hampton said she sponsored the bill after 1,000 voters in her town signed a petition asking for further limits on motorcycle noise.

SoCal Man Gets 15 Years for Killing Biker with Car

A Riverside County man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a hit & run crash that left a dead motorcyclist lodged in the rear window of his car.

California - Tony Martinez was sentenced Thursday in Superior Court in Corona to 10 years for gross vehicular manslaughter with intoxication and another five years for fleeing the scene.

Motorcycle Crashes Are On The Rise In Florida

Despite the chunk of money Floridians were spending on gas the past few years, many said they could not change how much they drove.

Florida - So some changed the vehicles they drove instead, buying fuel-efficient hybrids and motorcycles. Nationwide, motorcycle registrations increased from 3.9 million in 1998 to 7.1 million in 2007, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Florida reported 582,000 in 2007.

Berks County motorcycle Show Cruises Into Slow Economy

Motorcycles of every kind - even a hearse - drew hundreds of enthusiasts Saturday to the second day of the motorcycle expo's three-day run.

Pennsylvania - Mark Daniels was scoping out motorcycles Saturday because he expects to buy one this spring.

But he wasn't quite ready to buy one at the second annual Motorcycle Mania and Motor Sports Show in the Greater Reading Expo Center in Muhlenberg Township.

Crashes Prompt Calls for Motorcycle Safety

Everybody bears responsibility on road, groups say.

Florida - After treating an increased number of motorcycle crash victims in 2008, officials at Sacred Heart Hospital are urging motorcyclists to be safe and drivers to be aware.

Hospital officials said that in 2008, the emergency room treated more than 70 motorcycle crash victims ­— twice as many as 2007.

The Softer Side of Chrome at Biker Week

A sea of leather and chrome rode into Palm Springs this weekend for the seventh annual "American Heat" bike week. The crowd continues to grow every year, attracting new audiences.

California - We all know that women like things that shine, but its not just jewelry catching their eyes anymore. Now, it's the glimmer of chrome attracting their attention. Organizers at "American Heat" say more women are gearing up and hitting the road.

"It's been a great phenomenon in the last five years," says Randy Burke, President of " Road Shows."
